The goal of this project is to profile the most popular and profitable apps in both the App Store and Google Play Market.
Our company makes apps that are free to download and install. We rely on attracting many users to the app to earn revenue from in-app ads. Building data driven profiles will help guide our ios and Android developers on what apps to build in the future.
As of September 2018, there were approximately 2 million iOS apps available on the App Store, and 2.1 million Android apps on Google Play.
The data scientist did not collect new data, but rather used existing datasets scraped from the app stores web pages. This saves on resources like time and money.

The data scientist previewed the discussion section of the Google Play data set to search for common concerns.
This discussion outlines as error for row 10472. Let's explore the error by printing row 10472 against the header and correct row.

Examining the Android data set, we find that some apps have more than one entry. For instance, the application Instagram has four entries:
for app in android:
name= app[0]
if name == 'Instagram':
print(app)
['Instagram', 'SOCIAL', '4.5', '66577313', 'Varies with device', '1,000,000,000+', 'Free', '0', 'Teen', 'Social', 'July 31, 2018', 'Varies with device', 'Varies with device'] ['Instagram', 'SOCIAL', '4.5', '66577446', 'Varies with device', '1,000,000,000+', 'Free', '0', 'Teen', 'Social', 'July 31, 2018', 'Varies with device', 'Varies with device'] ['Instagram', 'SOCIAL', '4.5', '66577313', 'Varies with device', '1,000,000,000+', 'Free', '0', 'Teen', 'Social', 'July 31, 2018', 'Varies with device', 'Varies with device'] ['Instagram', 'SOCIAL', '4.5', '66509917', 'Varies with device', '1,000,000,000+', 'Free', '0', 'Teen', 'Social', 'July 31, 2018', 'Varies with device', 'Varies with device']
Instagram appears in the Android data set 4 times. The main difference between the entries is the 4th column - number of reviews.
Let's explore if there are other cases of duplicates apps.
duplicate_apps= []
unique_apps= []
for app in android:
name= app[0]
if name in unique_apps:
duplicate_apps.append(name)
else:
unique_apps.append(name)
print('Number of duplicate apps:',len(duplicate_apps))
print('\n')
print('Examples of duplicate apps:', duplicate_apps[:15])
Number of duplicate apps: 1181 Examples of duplicate apps: ['Quick PDF Scanner + OCR FREE', 'Box', 'Google My Business', 'ZOOM Cloud Meetings', 'join.me - Simple Meetings', 'Box', 'Zenefits', 'Google Ads', 'Google My Business', 'Slack', 'FreshBooks Classic', 'Insightly CRM', 'QuickBooks Accounting: Invoicing & Expenses', 'HipChat - Chat Built for Teams', 'Xero Accounting Software']
There are 1181 apps with duplicate entries. Counting the apps more than once will skew the analysis so the duplicates need to be deleted.
The main difference between entries is the 4th column - number of reviews. We will keep the row with the highest number of reviews. Reviews increase over time so this will be the most recent datapoint. Also the higher the number of reviews gives a more reliable rating.
Method to return the app with highest number of reviews:
# build the reviews_max dictionary
reviews_max= {}
for app in android:
name= app[0]
n_reviews= float(app[3])
if name in reviews_max and reviews_max[name] < n_reviews:
reviews_max[name]= n_reviews
if name not in reviews_max:
reviews_max[name]= n_reviews
Check accuracy of the code. The length of the reviews_max dictionary should equal the length of the Android dataset minus 1181 duplicates.
print('Expected length:', len(android)-1181)
print('Actual length:', len(reviews_max))
Expected length: 9659 Actual length: 9659
Now, let's use the reviews_max dictionary to remove the duplicates. For the duplicate cases, we'll only keep the entries with the highest number of reviews. In the code cell below:
android_clean= []
already_added= []
for app in android:
name= app[0]
n_reviews= float(app[3])
if (n_reviews == reviews_max[name]) and (name not in already_added):
android_clean.append(app)
already_added.append(name)
explore_data(android_clean,0,4,True)

There are 9659 rows, as expected.

Our company is only interested English apps. So foreign language apps will be deleted.
The method we will use is remove each app whose name contains a symbol that is not commonly used in English text. Characters and symbols used in English are encoded using the ASCII standard 0 - 127.
#ord() function returns ASCII standard number
print(ord('a'))
print(ord('A'))
print(ord('爱'))
print(ord('5'))
print(ord('+'))

We define a function is_english
that removes an app if its name has more than three non-ASCII characters.
A few non-english apps may get through this filter, but it is good enough for our analysis.

As we mentioned in the introduction, our aim is to determine the kinds of apps that are likely to attract more users because our revenue is highly influenced by the number of people using our apps.
To minimize risks and overhead, our validation strategy for an app idea is comprised of three steps:
Because our end goal is to add the app on both the App Store and Google Play, we need to find app profiles that are successful on both markets. For instance, a profile that might work well for both markets might be a productivity app that makes use of gamification.
Let's begin the analysis by getting a sense of the most common genres for each market. For this, we'll build a frequency table for the prime_genre column of the App Store data set, and the Genres and Category columns of the Google Play data set.
# Generate a frequency table that displays percentages
def freq_table(dataset, index):
table= {}
total= 0
for row in dataset:
total += 1
value= row[index]
if value in table:
table[value] +=1
else:

percentage= (table[key] / total)*100
table_percentages[key]= percentage
return table_percentages
# Display percentages in descending order

key_val_as_tuple = (table[key],key)

print(entry[1],':',entry[0])

The Android Google Play store data set has both genre and category columns that we analyzed. The difference between the two is that the genre column has many more distinct categories.
The largest category is 'Family'(18.9%), which are mainly games for children.
The top 3 genres are 'Tools'(8.45%), 'Entertainment'(6.1%), and 'Education'(5.3%). The Google Play store hosts many apps designed for practical purposes.

The iOS App Store has a majority (58.2%) of games apps. The next most frequent are 'entertainment' (8.9%), 'photo & video' (4.9%), and 'education' (3.7).
The iOS Apple store collection is focused on fun and entertainment, contrasting the Google Play Store's more balanced offerings of apps for practical purposes and for fun.
The fact that fun apps are the most numerous doesn't also imply that they also have the greatest number of users — the demand might not be the same as the offer. Next, let's explore which apps have the most users.
One way to find out what genres are the most popular (have the most users) is to calculate the average number of installs for each app genre. For the Google Play data set, we can find this information in the Installs column, but for the App Store data set this information is missing. As a workaround, we'll take the total number of user ratings as a proxy, which we can find in the rating_count_tot app.
Below, we calculate the average number of user ratings per app genre on the App Store:
#frequency table for ios prime_genre
ios_genres= freq_table(ios_final, 11)
for genre in ios_genres:
total= 0
len_genre= 0
for app in ios_final:
genre_app= app[11]
if genre_app == genre:
n_ratings= float(app[5])
total += n_ratings
len_genre += 1
avg_n_ratings = total / len_genre
print(genre,":",avg_n_ratings)

There is a pattern emerging that average number of reviews is heavily influenced by a few giants (Waze, Google Maps, FaceBook, Pinterest, Bible, Dictionary.com). This skew may make navigation, social networking or music apps seem more popular than they really are.
Our goal is is to find popular genres, that we can break into with a new app. The 'Reference' app niche seems to show some potential. One thing we could do is take another popular book and turn it into an app where we could add different features besides the raw version of the book. This might include daily quotes from the book, an audio version of the book, quizzes about the book, etc. On top of that, we could also embed a dictionary within the app, so users don't need to exit our app to look up words in an external app.
This idea seems to fit well with the fact that the App Store is dominated by for-fun apps. This suggests the market might be a bit saturated with for-fun apps, which means a practical app might have more of a chance to stand out among the huge number of apps on the App Store.
Other genres that seem popular include weather, book, food and drink, or finance. The book genre seem to overlap a bit with the app idea we described above, but the other genres don't seem too interesting to us:
Weather apps — people generally don't spend too much time in-app, and the chances of making profit from in-app adds are low. Also, getting reliable live weather data may require us to connect our apps to non-free APIs.
Food and drink — examples here include Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts, McDonald's, etc. So making a popular food and drink app requires actual cooking and a delivery service, which is outside the scope of our company.
Finance apps — these apps involve banking, paying bills, money transfer, etc. Building a finance app requires domain knowledge, and we don't want to hire a finance expert just to build an app.
(Analysis directly copied from DataQuest experts)
Now let's analyze the Google Play market a bit.
The Android Google Play data set includes number of installs, which more directly show genre popularity.

The values in the number of installs column are open ended (100+, 1,000+, 5,000+, etc.) This data is not precise, but is good enough for our analysis.
For the analysis we will assume an app with 100,000+ installs has 100,000 installs, and an app with 1,000,000+ installs has 1,000,000 installs, and so on.
To continue the analysis we have to remove the commas and the plus characters.

On average, communication apps have the most installs: 38,456,119. This number is heavily skewed up by a few apps that have over one billion installs (WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Skype, Google Chrome, Gmail, and Hangouts), and a few others with over 100 and 500 million installs:

These apps are skewing the average number of installs for communication apps. Let's remove these apps, and test what the average number of installs is for apps with fewer than 100,000,000 intalls.

After removing the apps with over 100M installs, the average number of installs for the communication genre decreases from 38,456,119 to 3,603,485. A reduction of roughly 10 times.
This is a repeating pattern where the a few big apps are skewing the results for the whole genre. In social apps (the giants are Facebook, Instagram, Google+, etc.), photography apps (Google Photos and other popular photo editors), and productivity apps (Microsoft Word, Dropbox, Google Calendar, Evernote, etc.).
This is a concern for our company because it is hard to compete against these large established apps.
The books and reference genre looks fairly popular, with an average number of installs of 8,767,811. It's interesting to explore this in more depth, since we found this genre has some potential to work well on the App Store, and our aim is to recommend an app genre that shows potential for being profitable on both the App Store and Google Play.
Let's take a look at some of the apps from this genre and their number of installs:

The book and reference genre includes a variety of apps: software for processing and reading ebooks, various collections of libraries, dictionaries, tutorials on programming or languages, etc.
The market is saturated with software for processing and reading ebooks, as well as various collections of libraries and dictionaries
We also notice there are quite a few apps built around the book Quran, which suggests that building an app around a popular book can be profitable. It seems that taking a popular book (perhaps a more recent book) and turning it into an app could be profitable for both the Google Play and the App Store markets.
However, it looks like the market is already full of libraries, so we need to add some special features besides the raw version of the book. This might include daily quotes from the book, an audio version of the book, quizzes on the book, a forum where people can discuss the book, etc.
In this project, we analyzed data about the App Store and Google Play mobile apps with the goal of recommending an app profile that can be profitable for both markets.
